Our Philosophy and Religion program teaches students the major problems, concepts, writings, and movements in the history of Western philosophy while focusing on the major divisions of logic, ethics, theory of knowledge, and metaphysics. Students interested in philosophy can pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, a minor in ethics, or a minor in philosophy. Our Philosophy and Religion programs offer our students the opportunity to do independent research. Students are given the chance to hone in on a specific philosophical question that interests them while conducting research to develop an original argument, discover relevant and high-quality sources, and create a compelling scholarly document for their Senior thesis.
Being located in the political hub of our nation in Washington, D.C. has its benefits for Philosophy students. One benefit is access to a vast world of ideas. Many establishments throughout the city host special events, giving you and your classmates the perfect opportunity to engage in critical thinking and discussion outside of the classroom. In addition, you have access to world class museums and exhibits providing thought provoking information.
There are many paths for a Philosophy and Religion student to take. For that reason, students are encouraged to participate in internships to dive into a variety of potential career settings.
Legal Internship
Perhaps the most common path for the graduating Philosopher is to enter the legal field. A legal internship will provide hands-on experience in an attorney鈥檚 office to practice the methods and themes of your courses.
Education Internship
For the scholastic Philosopher, an internship in education will provide an opportunity to learn the basics of conducting and controlling a classroom. From grading papers to confident presentations, an internship at a local elementary school or high school is sure to prepare you for your future as an educator.
Research Internship
Put your training in critical thinking to the test with a research internship. Research organizations or research assistant positions are an excellent way to develop your skills and gain personal and professional experience in the field of research.
Founded as the Philosophical Society of Washington, and located in the historic Cosmos Club, these free events offer students an opportunity to engage in the philosophical discussions taking place beyond the borders of Gallaudet.
