Dr. Danielle Previ, G-’15 & PhD ’18, of the Gallaudet Psychology Clinic was the keynote presenter at the , held October 17-19 at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Previ’s presentation, titled “Deaf on the Spectrum,” set the stage for the three-day conference, which included professional, consumer, and family perspectives.

ASD partnered with Deaf Autism America to host this first-ever conference. According to the conference prospectus, it “brought the deaf education community together to connect and learn, and to empower them to better serve deaf students on the autism spectrum. The goal was to provide a space for educators to engage in dialogue, expand knowledge and understanding, and provide strategies, tools, and resources.” 

The included presentations, videos, roundtables, and panels. Participants toured ASD’s classrooms, sensory rooms, and museum. They also viewed the documentary film Being Michelle and participated in a panel discussion afterward. The film is about a deaf woman with autism who survived incarceration and abuse. Dr. Gabriel Lomas, G-’01, director of Gallaudet’s master’s degree program in counseling, was a consultant on the film. 

Dr. Previ, a graduate of Gallaudet’s clinical psychology program, is a nationally-renowned authority on autism and deaf people. In addition to her work at the Gallaudet Psychology Clinic, she is an intervention track director with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child Resilience Center.
