Every three years, Gallaudet selects research priorities that guide our work. These priorities build upon our legacy as the world’s premier research institution focusing on experiences, signed languages, and accessible technologies for deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing people.

The creation of research priorities is mandated by the . Ongoing research projects at Gallaudet are listed in the Annual Report of Achievements.

2025-2028 Research Priorities

骋补濒濒补耻诲别迟鈥檚 Office of Research selected the new priorities below after engagement with alumni, as well as discussions with the university鈥檚 current research stakeholders.

  1. Education
    Practices and policies for deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing people of all ages, in education and beyond.
  2. Language and Cognition
    Brain and language processing, including multilingual learning.
  3. Artificial Intelligence / Big Data
    Advanced computational approaches to signed language and accessibility.
  4. Accessibility
    Universal design, technology transfer, captioning, and AR/VR/Avatars, among other topics.
  5. Deaf Experience
    The lived experience of deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing people, including language deprivation, intersectional identities, mental health and wellbeing, genetic therapies, and more.

Growth

Researchers at Gallaudet continue making significant impacts on our campus community and beyond. With the establishment of the Research and Innovation initiative, our awarded grants and contracts have increased substantially in recent years.

This increase has been fueled by innovative idea generation, strategic investment and support, and a talented research ecosystem that includes faculty, staff, and our students.

Alignment with Gallaudet Promise

黑料老司机鈥檚 strategic plan, the Gallaudet Promise, is currently in Phase 2.聽The newly established research priority areas will align our research infrastructure with the university鈥檚 strategic goals.

Phase 2 of the Gallaudet Promise emphasizes the creation of an inclusive environment where all members of our community can contribute and thrive. Our research priorities will directly support the university’s four key goals for Phase 2:
